สิบล้อพุ่งชนบัสกลางเมืองโคราช ก่อนเสียหลักชนจยย.เสียหายนับ 10 คัน 

เมื่อวันที่ 16 กันยายน 2559 เวลา 21.29 น. พันตำรวจโทธนภัทร เหล่าทะนนท์ พนักงานสอบสวนสถานีตำรวจภูธรเมืองนครราชสีมา ได้รับแจ้งเหตุรถบรรทุกพุ่งชนรถบัสรับส่งพนักงานก่อนเสียหลักพุ่งชนรถจักรยานยนต์ ที่บริเวณเทินไนท์บ้านเกาะ ต.บ้านเกาะ อ.เมือง จ. นครราชสีมา จึงรีบรุดไปยังที่เกิดเหตุพร้อมด้วยเจ้าหน้าที่กู้ภัยสว่างเมตตานครราชสีมา เมื่อถึงที่เกิดเหตุพบรถบัสโดยสารรับส่งคนงานของบริษัทเอกชนแห่งหนึ่ง จอดอยู่บริเวณใกล้จุดกลับรถ ด้วยสภาพด้านหน้ารถพังยับเยิน ภายในรถพบผู้ได้รับบาดเจ็บเป็นคนขับทราบชื่อต่อมาคือนายสรศักดิ์ จันแก้ว อายุ 41 ปี ชาวจังหวัดนครราชสีมา นั่งร้องขอความช่วยเหลืออยู่ที่เบาะคนขับ เจ้าหน้าที่จึงต้องช่วยกันงัดพวงมาลัยรถ เพื่อนำร่างออกมาทำการปฐมพยาบาลเบื้องต้น ก่อนนำตัวส่งรักษาต่อที่โรงพยาบาลมหาราชนครราชสีมา


ใกล้กันพบรถบรรทุก 10 ล้อ จอดอยู่บริเวณชิดขอบถนน โดยมีร่องรอยของการพุ่งไปชนรถจักรยานยนต์ของประชาชนที่มาเลือกซื้อสินค้าภายในตลาดไนท์บ้านเกาะที่ได้จอดไว้ที่บริเวณริมถนนล้มระเนระนาด พังเสียหายกว่า 10 คัน โดยจากการตรวจสอบรถบรรทุก10 ล้อ ไม่พบคนขับแต่อย่างไร ด้านพันตำรวจโทธนภัทร เหล่าทะนนท์ พนักงานสอบสวนสถานีตำรวจภูธรเมืองนครราชสีมา เปิดเผยว่า จากการสอบสวน นายสรศักดิ์ จันแก้ว (คนขับรถบัส) เล่าว่าตนเองนั้นได้ขับรถบัสรับส่งพนักงานโดยเป็นรถเปล่า มากลับรถในจุดกลับรถดังกล่าว แต่ในระหว่างที่ตนเองกำลังเลี้ยวกลับรถนั้นได้มีรถบรรทุกวิ่งมาด้วยความเร็วพุ่งเข้าชนรถบัสของตนเองที่บริเวณด้านหน้าทางด้านขวาอย่างจัง ก่อนที่รถบรรทุก 10 ล้อ จะเสียหลักพุ่งไปชนรถจักรยานยนต์ที่จอดอยู่ ทั้งนี้เจ้าหน้าที่ตำรวจจะต้องเร่งติดตามตัวคนขับรถบรรทุก 10 ล้อ มาทำการสอบสวนหาสาเหตุของการเกิดอุบัติเหตุที่แท้จริงอีกครั้ง เพื่อดำเนินคดีตามกฎหมายต่อไป

A car filled with a slithering menagerie of reptiles destined to be sold at market in Vietnam was seized by Cambodia-Vietnam border officials in Kandal province on Wednesday night, according to Koh Thom district police.

Muong Dara, director of the local customs office, said yesterday that his team had deployed forces to Koh Thom’s Sampov Puon village after receiving a tip-off from a villager at 7:30pm, informing them that a car carrying wild animals was preparing to cross the border to Vietnam.

“We spotted a car carrying a strange plate number,” he said, explaining that the plate – registered to Phnom Penh – bore only three digits instead of four, the standard assigned to all vehicles registered in Kandal.

“When our forces stopped [the car] for checking, the driver got out of the car and escaped,” he said. “After inspecting the car, the team found many types of wild animals including 124 kilograms of snakes and 243 kilograms of mountain tortoises.”

The car has been impounded for further investigation, and the animals will either be freed into the forest or handed to WildAid, a wildlife conservation group, he added.

Conservationist Marcus Hardtke yesterday blasted USAID and Winrock for “four years of mismanagement” as the Forest Monitoring Working Group put out a call for “urgent action” from the American bodies.

“They’re not addressing the core problem,” Hardtke said, adding that the two groups were ignoring the corruption that drives illegal logging.

Yesterday’s statement warned that rampant illegal logging in community forests and protected areas of Prey Lang – where Winrock has USAID-funded programs – meant resin trees would be “completely wiped out” by 2017.

The statement appealed for “strong political commitment” to combat complicity by authorities and government officials.

Curtis Handley, of Winrock, said his organisation had done plenty, and “provided equipment and trained patrols to help protect forests”.

But, Hardtke said, “All their workshops and their surveys and their feel-good stuff are not saving a single tree.”

US Embassy spokesman David Josar said that USAID “is committed to protecting and preserving Cambodia’s forests”.

US politician with ties to Cambodia kills self

New York state assemblyman Bill Nojay, who had maintained a colourful connection to Cambodia over the past three decades, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound in New York on Friday, according to the Associated Press.

Nojay most recently made headlines in Cambodia in 2014, when he was named along with three others in a fraud case. He was treasurer of Akra Agricultural Partners Inc, which billed itself as designed to rejuvenate Cambodian rice farming by serving as an umbrella brand for cooperative farmers.

Phnom Penh dentist Eng Lykuong invested $1 million in the company in 2012, only for the board of directors to spend the next year avoiding her calls, she said yesterday. The case saw three of the board tried in absentia and the fourth, San Richer, found guilty in late 2014.

Among the board members was Nojay’s old classmate from Columbia University, Sichan Siv, known for being the United States’ ambassador to the UN from 2001 to 2006.

Siv was also responsible for bringing about Nojay’s first visit to Cambodia in the 1980s, according to a 1996 interview with the assemblyman in the Rochester Business Journal.

By the mid-1980s, Siv was the Khmer People’s National Liberation Front’s (KPNLF) ambassador to the UN. The KPNLF was a guerrilla force operating along the Thai border and Siv invited his old classmate to join the cause as its US counsel.

An archived version of Nojay’s biography on his official website said that he crossed the border “without the benefit of a visa but with courtesy of Task Force 80”, referencing an elite border patrol unit of the Thai army.
