Kampot police seeking driver in fatal hit-and-run
Kampot police seeking driver in fatal hit-and-run
Police in Kampot are calling for the driver responsible for a hit-and-run accident on Sunday that killed three – including an infant – to come forward and take responsibility.
Seng Ratana, deputy police chief in charge of traffic in Kampot’s Kampong Trach district, identified the victims as cousins Plet Keo, 34, and Min Chuory, 23, and Chuory’s 6-month-old son, Ploan Sarin – all residents of Banteay Meas district, who were sharing a motorbike at the time of the crash.
After the accident, the victim’s bodies were collected by relatives and taken home for funeral preparations.
While the driver escaped the scene, police identified the owner of the car as Sok Chenda, a resident of Phnom Penh’s Stung Meanchey commune. The car and motorbike were impounded at Kampong Trach district police station.
“At the moment, we want the car owner to take the responsibility under the laws,” Ratana said.

Malaysian man busted with kilo of heroin at airport
Malaysian man busted with kilo of heroin at airport

Tue, 13 September 2016
A Malaysian national was arrested at Phnom Penh International Airport en route to Macau yesterday with more than a kilo of heroin strapped to his thighs, police sources said yesterday.
Ahmad Johari Chung, born in 1993, arrived at the airport at noon and was detained at the departure gate, where he was found to have 1,088.61 grams of heroin on his person, according to an airport police officer who declined to be named.
“The police decided to stop him and test the powder and found it was heroin. Then he was sent to the anti-drug department,” he said.
A senior official working on the case at the Interior Ministry’s anti-drug department said the suspect was being questioned late yesterday afternoon, declining to give further information as it might jeopardise a wider investigation.
“We are questioning him here to find out who is behind him. He is cooperating with us. He is just a delivery man,” said the official, who also declined to be named.
In February, Cambodia was named in a UN Office on Drugs and Crime report as an increasingly important transportation hub in the regional drugs trade, which it noted has skyrocketed in recent years, with regional crystal methamphetamine seizures up fivefold in as many years.
Meanwhile, in Sihanoukville, 31-year-old French national Julien David Fleury was brought before an investigating judge at Preah Sihanouk Provincial Court yesterday to answer questions surrounding drug possession, use and trafficking charges, according to provincial deputy prosecutor Huot Vichet.
Suy Hieng, police chief of Mittapheap district’s commune 4, said that Fleury was residing at a Koh Rong guesthouse and was found with 3.2 grams of methamphetamine on his person.
Man killed as iPhone charged, say police
Man killed as iPhone charged, say police

Police said a Phnom Penh village chief was electrocuted as he slept on Sunday afternoon with his iPhone resting on his chest.
Prey Sar commune chief Khan Sokhai said the victim, identified as Kim Pov, 44, returned home after taking his wife to the market, and took a nap. He was found dead by his daughter at 4pm.
“We suspect that he died from electrocution because his iPhone and its cable were destroyed,” Sokhai said. “His charger may not be the original Apple product.”
Sokhai said the commune had experienced a power outage that morning, and speculated that the surge of current passing through the cable when power was restored might have contributed to the fatal shock.
Kao Damaityna, marketing manager of iOne, the leading Apple retailer in Cambodia, declined to comment on this case but said she had not received any complaints or heard of similar electrocution incidents from customers.
The death comes on the heels of at least two other iPhone-related cases: the first, in which a Chinese stewardess died after answering a call on an iPhone 5 that was connected to a third-party charger; and the second, in which a Chinese man went into a coma after being electrocuted while connecting his iPhone 4 to a counterfeit charger.
In 2013, responding to safety issues caused by counterfeit adapters, Apple launched a global program to replace third-party chargers with its products, emphasising that “customer safety is a top priority at Apple” and that its products “undergo rigorous testing for safety”.
Apple could not be reached for comment yesterday.
