Doctored Shrimp From Vietnam Seized

Border police in Kampot province seized nearly 300 kilograms of illegally imported shrimp injected with gelatin on Wednesday night, after finding similar adulteration in shrimp seized from the same seafood dealer last week.
Leng Vibol, chief of the Prek Chak International Checkpoint, told Khmer Times yesterday that the raid had been a collaboration between police and health inspectors.
“On Wednesday night, the CamControl officials seized in the raid 295 kilograms of shrimp that was found to be injected with gelatin inside the head and back,” he said, explaining that this had been done to increase their weight and boost their presentation. He said officials had been closely watching the imports of a Cambodian seafood dealer after her detention last week over importing “poor quality” products.
“This is second time for her that she violated the law after importing low quality shrimp from Vietnam,” he said.
The last batch had not been checked for gelatin, he said, and had already been destroyed.
The unnamed women had signed a contract with police last week promising not to import illegal produce, but had faced no further action.
This time, however, Mr. Vibol said authorities will not be so lenient.
“Even though we have not arrested her, legal action will be taken,” he said.
